A spirited change

It's often said that a leopard cannot change its spots...without getting a dye job anyways, and this proverb tends to remain true, along the same vein as the one about old dogs and new tricks. However, there are times when outside influences can alter anything. Such is what happened with the old Esper of Vengeance, Ekess.

Vengeance, not something one would normally associate with love and a need for family, but an esper is not solely defined by their domain. Ekess had lost touch with her parents during the evacuation of the Esper Forest before the Great Burning, and had also been losing hope of ever finding them again when she was unexpectedly welcomed into a mortal home while she was in the city. Okay, maybe abducted into a mortal's home is more like it, since she was in one place one minute, and inside someone's house the next. Shockingly, Ekess wasn't the only spirit there, Gerna, the spirit of Fertility, was also in the room, and seemed to be the reason that Ekess was even around. The meeting shocked the esper, instilling in her a kind of awe for life itself. Promises were made, with strict conditions associated with them. Ekess would remain with this mortal family except when called to court, and if her outlook changed enough, Gerna would gain a new servant in the mortal realm.

All was not bad though, since this actually enabled Ekess to see what mortals are really like, and to come to care for them rather than not care about them at all other than as potential victims of her portfolio when the time came to strike back. With caring came understanding, and then genuine affection in turn. After a while, Ekess found that she couldn't think of mortals as cattle anymore, too much had changed in her spirit and the fact that she ever had thought of them this way made her feel ill. Soon after this, Gerna, visited Ekess and reminded her of the promises that were made months back. The conditions had been met and it was time for changes to be made.

After a month, Ekess was recognizeable as her old self still, but was not quite the same. Her gender and species were the only things not changed through the intimate contact that she shared with Gerna's own domain and essence. Where her skin was once green, when she wasn't blending in with her environment, it is now blue with a few faint purple highlights. Her domain was shifted drastically, from Vengeance to Defense, and most importantly, she finally felt whole again, since she had something that she could call a family once more.
