Midgar

The lost city of the ages, watched over by Sister Ray, Midgar sits just outside the shining walls of Alexander, its own steel walls butting against the depths of the Abyss. The city of technology, whose great bulwarks enclose the 8 sectors of the city of old, buildings of brick, of steel and glass; illuminated by electrical energy in the style of pre-holy days.

The roads are tarmac or cobblestones, the buildings functional yet close, walls against walls and those open spaces that do exist tend to be brick squares and roundabouts with a central statue, fountain or feature. Though on the surface the city may seem fantastic, a reminder of what was there is beneath it all the hum of technology that lets it be.

The chug and clatter of trains as they move from sector to sector through the great dividing black steel bulwarks that divide each sector from the other, carriages, sealed and moving under their own power, some on wheels some hovering within the air ply the streets beneath the yellow/orange glow of street lamps or the piercing white light of lampposts’ in more residential areas.

At the edge of the realm lie the 8 Mako Reactors, they power the city, it’s life blood and power, Mako and electricity, giving life to all those who dwell within it’s ancient metal walls. None truly know the truth of these machines, ancient tales speak of how they drained the lifestream from Gaia, fueling their insidious devices to provide power and create the magical orbs known as Materia. But here in Midgar of the Spirit Realm it is a point of speculation for scholars, summoners and the Disciples of Sister Ray as to whether or not these are truly like the reactors of old or metaphor.

Midgar is a realm that is less Metaphor and more reality, less dream and based in logic and science. The favored thought is that though the city is based in logic, it is still a spirit realm, so clearly there must be other means known only to the master of the realm as to how it all works. But none have ever found the truth so the mystery abounds

In the centre of the city rises the great tower, reaching 70 floors high, green glass bound by steel, illuminated from within, blazing out in the sky above the city. The structure when seen from any angle clearly has some other purpose, some function, built into its very being and the strange, unusual protrusions, towers and objects that rise it from the very ground, up to the sky above. A fact many forget that level 1 of those 70 floors start at the surface of the plate, the great core of Midgar sinks below those plates for well over half a mile to the shrouded, lifeless floor beneath.

For those who visit Midgar it is a journey of great peril, with little knowledge of the fantastic science that makes it possible it is a difficult realm to follow. A traveler need rely on their wits, their knowledge of science and the world around them and less upon their lore of the spirits, this is a realm best sought by those whose minds are scientifically inclined over those more in touch with the metaphorical nature of other spirits.

Midgar is not just a city of bright lights, there is another place, the shadowy realm beneath the plates where once it is said great villages huddled in darkness and artificial light. It is now a land of mystery and lost secrets. One can enter Midgar through this realm or descend to it from on high by taking one of the trains.

The 7th segment, where the ancient train station terminates is set out as a memorial and grave-yard. With a single building 7th Heaven, from the outside it looks to be an ancient tavern but the doors are sealed and none may enter.

Near the outsikirts of the 5th Segment a great church stands, caught in a shaft of natural sunlight, so that the flowers inside, the only flowers in all this shadowed realm can bloom. Few know the truth of this or the reason why and it is said that here in the shadows of Midgar lost secrets may be found, and forgotten stories brought to life once again.

Beware the paths of technology, learn not the secrets there, or what you learn may bind you there.

An old rhyme concerning Midgar and it’s guardian spirits dedication and duty to preserving the technology that is here whilst not letting it leave. A visitor may look at a series of clockwork gears that run a door way and learn more about clockwork. But to pry into the electrical wonders, to steal the power of combustion engines or fireless, magic-less lights is forbidden, no secret not already present on Gaia can leave this realm, in physical form or the mind of one who has learnt too much.
